Hospitals begin online ER registration

DELRAY BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Everyone has a story about waiting in the emergency room.

But five hospitals in Palm Beach County are trying to give you a reason to never have one of those painful memories again.

On Friday afternoon, Vincent Polimeni sat in the West Boca Medical Center Emergency Room with what might be a broken ankle. "There was this thing on the ground that I didn't see, and I tripped over it," said Polimeni.

It happened at about noon Friday while he was playing football during recess. "I was resting it but it still hurts," said Polimeni.

When the school nurse called his mother, Vivian Polimeni, the nurse suggested a trip to the ER for X-rays in case things didn't get better.

The first thing that came to Polimeni's mind? The four hour waits she's experienced at area hospitals. "The kids get irritated; they're exhausted. It's freezing. You just want to get in and out," she said.

Fortunately for her, Friday's wait at West Boca's ER was only 20 minutes.

But if she'd known that she could use their online reservation system, which allows you to put in time of arrival, she would have. "For a working parent, you know at least you can make the appointment leave work, get the kid, and go right to the hospital," said Polimeni.

Here's what nurses like about the system, called InQuickER: When a reservation comes in, they can see what symptoms a patient has, what kind of care they'll need, and make sure they have the right medicines ready.

"They start their care almost immediately," said Christy Wise, the ER clinical manager at West Boca Medical Center.

Vivian Polimeni never knows when one of her three kids will come up limping. If she needs any reminder to pre-register for the ER, it might come from Vincent.

"I'll get in and out of there, and then I'll know what happened to me. And I'll be fine," he said.

The service costs $9.99 and is NOT intended for anyone who has either a serious or life-threatening medical emergency.
