WPB neighborhood growing accustomed to deadly shootings

WEST PALM BEACH, FL(WFLX) - The crime scene tape was taken down from outside an apartment near Tamarind at 1017 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard twice on Saturday after two homicides.

"It's Tamarind. You're going to get used to it whether you live down here or you don't because so many people passed away," said Bebe Beckles who lives near the crime scenes.

There were two deaths in 12 hours, and the people in the neighborhood said they are used to it.

"The proximity and location being the same leads one to believe there has to be some commonality between the two shootings," said Capt. Mary Olsen with the West Palm Beach Police Dept.

The first victim was identified as 25-year-old Edward Burkes. He was shot and killed at 4:30 a.m.

Then at 3:00 p.m. another man in his 20s was gunned down.

Police say there were likely plenty of witnesses, but no one is coming forward with information.

"They say, 'No we didn't see anything, or no we don't know what you're talking about,'" said Capt. Olsen.

"Nobody is going to say anything, and I don't blame them because I wouldn't say anything either," said Melissa Williams who lives nearby.

Tight-lipped residents say they think the two deadly shootings could be related and wonder how long it will be until a similar scene unfolds.

"Just as we see that person laying on the ground, they are thinking that could be them next. A lot can happen between the time something happened and when you call 911, " said Daniel Ford who grew up in the area.

Police still haven't identified the second victim.
