Boynton father charged with child neglect, disorderly intoxication

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - After jumping in the water to relieve himself, throwing his sandal at his son, and consuming at least seven alcoholic drinks while boating, a Boynton Beach father got himself arrested on Mother's Day.

Kenneth Boersma, 48, was charged with child neglect and disorderly intoxication Sunday night, according to a West Palm Beach Police arrest report.

Police were called to 150 S. Flagler Road, a waterfront boat dock, and told by security workers that a man was there who couldn't operate his boat.

Boersma told the officer he and his son took the boat from his friends in Boynton Beach, then went to the waterfront to go to E.R. Bradley's Saloon in West Palm Beach for more drinks and food for his son, the police report says.

The officer asked Boersma how he was planning on getting home and why he was all wet. Boersma told him he planned on driving his boat because he had only $3, and didn't want to get a taxi. He also told police he "didn't feel like" using the restroom so jumped in the water instead.

Boersma's son told police he saw his dad drink seven beers while on the boat ride, and some mixed drinks at Old Key Lime House in Lantana. The 9-year-old said Boersma's wife showed up and slapped him after they got into a fight.

The father and son then left and traveled to E.R. Bradley's for more drinks.

Boersma ordered "Crown Royal and cokes" until the waitress cut him off, the police report says.

Boersma got angry with his son, punched him and pulled his hair. Then he took his sandal off and threw it at the boy, the report says.

While the boy went to security to get help, a couple ran up saying a man was drowning in the water.

Security walked over and found Boersma "floundering around in the water."

Boersma was released from Palm Beach County Jail Monday afternoon under his own supervision.
