South Florida doctors performing free surgery to save Haitians

WELLINGTON, FL (WFLX) - Many South Florida doctors are donating their time and money to help Haiti and the people who don't have the money to get needed medical care.

One woman, Fox 29's Medical Expert Dr. David Soria met in Haiti, underwent a life-saving surgery through the kindness of these doctors.

"There was not much space between the mass and the back of the throat," said Dr. Ellis Webster. "That tells me she would not be around long enough if we did not do something about it, and she would not die a pleasant death. She would have strangled her."

Marie Pierre came to the attention of Dr. Webster. He and his team were on hand to do the delicate surgery -- all for free.

It was a complete success.  "I can never stop thanking the doctors and the hospital. I'll send letters and prayers for the doctors in the hospital," said Pierre.

"We have to be willing and open to helping in these situations," said Dr. Webster. "Certainly, we know -- with the way medicine is going these days with low reimbursement and increased malpractice and things like that -- we have to remember our oath to help people. And there are people less fortunate that need that help."

Unfortunately, there are thousands still in Haiti who could need this surgery.

Pierre's surgery was performed at Wellington Regional by Dr. Webster, costs anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000.
