'Haile's Bill' fails to win over Florida lawmakers

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A law, set out to save children from dying in daycare vans, fails to win over lawmakers.

The bill, named "Haile's Bill," was named in memory of 2 1/2-year-old Haile Brockington.

She died last summer after being left behind in a hot daycare van.

Haile's Bill would have required all daycare vans to be equipped with alarm systems that must be turned off manually -- forcing drivers to make sure no child is left behind. "To think that Florida, being such a dangerously hot time in the summer, would have to go through another summer without this technology really shows that politics gets in the way of safety," said Senator Maria Sachs.

Sachs says she plans to introduce the bill, again, next session.

In the meantime, Sachs plans on contacting daycare centers statewide asking its operators to invest in these alarms on their own.
