Lake Worth casino, John G's closes

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - A lot of business owners and visitors are calling it the end of an era.

Memorial Day Monday marked the last day for most of the businesses inside in the old casino building in Lake Worth. "I'm reminiscing about all of the years that we've been here," said Miriam Mermelstein.

Many people spent the day remembering what the building looked like decades ago when there was a dance hall on the second floor.

In June, construction crews will begin an $11 million renovation. "We've had a good season this year, and we've seen all of the old faces coming back to wish me the bust of luck," said Barry Freedman, who owns two stores in the building.

There was a long line of people waiting to eat at John G's for their last meal inside the complex.

City leaders are hoping when the project is complete in about a year, the new renovations will bring new people to the area. They said they're already getting interest from new shop owners who are looking to move into the building once the renovations are complete.
