Homestead teen dies trying to saving cousin

HOMESTEAD, FL (SUN-SENTINEL) - A Homestead teenager, who tried to save his cousin after the car they were in plunged into a canal on U.S. Highway 27 near Weston, has died, the Broward Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

Darren Baldwin, 17, initially escaped from the vehicle, along with other relatives Monday evening, but then joined a cousin in trying to help a 12-year-old boy who was struggling to escape from the submerged 2001 Ford Explorer.

All the vehicle's occupants, except for Baldwin, survived.

Arriving firefighters from BSO Fire Rescue joined the canal search and found Baldwin. Despite resuscitative efforts, Baldwin was pronounced dead about 8 p.m. Monday at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. The family dog also perished in the crash.

According to BSO, Walter Horn Jr., 40, was driving four other people back to Homestead from Central Florida Monday evening when at about 6:45 p.m. he lost control of the SUV about six miles south of Interstate 75 and ended up in a canal on the west side of U.S. 27.

Horn, Walter Horn III, 15, Henry Horn, 12, and Charlotte Davis, 42, all of Homestead, were taken to Cleveland Clinic Hospital with injuries that were non life-threatening, BSO said.
