Gardens teacher receives loaded handgun from student

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) - A teacher at Allamanda Elementary School received an unwelcome end-of-the-year gift from one of her students on Tuesday: a loaded .22-caliber handgun.

UPDATE, WED 5 PM: The school district says the gun was in a gift given by the grandmother of a student. It happened in the parking lot and the student never had possession of the weapon. The grandmother did not know there was a weapon in the box.

Previously: According to a Palm Beach County School District spokesman, an 8-year-old girl brought her teacher a present to the Palm Beach Gardens school on Tuesday. When the teacher opened the present at home later that evening, inside, at the bottom of the box, was the gun.

District spokesman Nat Harrington said preliminary interviews led authorities to believe that the incident was unintentional, and that the girl probably did not know the gun was in the box.

He said that authorities believe that the child's grandmother had previously found the gun and put it away in the box, and that the child subsequently used the box for the present.

The investigation is ongoing; the identities of the teacher and student have not been released.

While the police investigation is ongoing, the preliminary findings indicate that at the end of the day, yesterday, Tuesday, the grandmother of a student at Allamanda Elementary School brought a boxed, end-of-year gift of toiletries to school for the child's teacher. Apparently unknown to the grandmother, the box also contained a small caliber handgun. The grandmother allegedly handed the boxed gift to the teacher, who was in the school parking lot assisting with dismissal. At no time was the gun in the school nor did the student have possession of the gun, according to the preliminary investigation.

The earlier statement, based in preliminary information stated: School police are investigating a report that a student at Allamanda Elementary School yesterday, apparently unintentionally, may have given a teacher a gift in a box that also contained a small handgun. No one was threatened or injured. The investigation is continuing, and no further information is available at this time.
