Are you prepared? Red Cross offers tips during Fire Safety Month

Washington-AP -- Americans clearly care about fire safety -- with an estimated 95 percent having smoke detectors in their homes.

But the Red Cross says there's a problem -- only half of those people check their detectors regularly. That's one thing the organization hopes to change during October -- which is National Fire Safety Month.

So how often should you check those smoke detectors? According to American Red Cross President Marty Evans -- every month. And change the batteries at least once a year.

Evans has other tips for families. She says it's important to keep chimneys clean. And, Evans encourages you to own a fire extinguisher -- but stresses that you must take the time to read the instructions and know how to use it.
