Why do you speed?

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Do you ever wish you could pull over speeders on I-95 and ask them why they drive like that?

Some of the stats say it has never been safer to drive, but spend a few minutes on this highway, and you can find people risking their lives and yours.

Riding along with Deputy Jason Karlecke, we entered I-95 at Boynton Beach Boulevard. It took us 33 seconds to radar someone going 86 miles an hour and weaving through lanes.

"He's oblivious to our presence right now. He's still doing 86 mph," said Deputy Karlecke. "He doesn't know we're here."

Or that we had just attended an annual anti-aggressive driving dinner hosted by State Rep Irv Slosberg. In attendance were families of victims of car crashes.

With that in mind, we approached the alleged speeder, who closed his window on us. "You could see that the roads were wet; they were still slick," said Karlecke. "He was doing 21 miles over the speed limit."

Deputies say there seems to be a lack of a sense of personal responsibility.

Minutes later, the radar said a gray Camry almost hit triple digits. "He just did 99 miles per hour. Now, he's cutting off," Karlecke said.

That speed requires a court appearance and maybe a hefty fine.

And for what?

"When I pulled him over, he said, the reason he was speeding is that he was running late to a softball game. When I asked him why he was doing 99 mph, his statement to me was, 'He wasn't going that fast,'" informed Karlecke.

Reporter: "Was he?"

Karlecke: "Absolutely, there's no doubt."

One mother, we spoke with, lost her son in a traffic accident. Russell Jeanrenaud was killed last year at 24. "I will beep at people. I'll wave my hands out the window, just to slow down, be careful. I see kids on motorcycles in and out of traffic. You know your mommy would miss you if something happened to you," said Jeanrenaud's mother.

We wound up pulling three people over Thursday night.
