If you must buy an extended service contract

AP -- Many experts will tell you that extended service contracts for new cars are a waste of money, because so many problems are now covered under long warranties.

But if you still want the extra peace of mind, Consumers' Checkbook says do some shopping around. The magazine says call up dealers, ask them what they'll charge you for a particular service contract, and you can compare "apples to apples" because dealers sell identical contracts from the manufacturer.

You can even buy service contracts online, though Checkbook founder and editor Robert Krughoff doesn't recommend that. He thinks you get better price quotes by phoning different dealers.

Also know that you don't need to buy a service contract immediately when you purchase the vehicle. You may have up to one year or 12-thousand miles to make your decision.
