Travel Tuesday: Using your credit card points

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - More and more travelers are using credit card points for their vacations. But some cards have better rewards than others.

Peter Friedman from Unique Travel has some advice before you cash in your points:

If you have an Amex Card with Member Rewards, points can be deposited in several different Frequent Flyer Programs on a basis of 1 Amex Point equals 1 Frequent Flyer Point. There is no need to move your points until doing a booking. This means the points do not expire.

Disadvantage using an Amex Card is the seat must be available in a specific code that varies from one airline to the next. This means you should be booking approximately 331 days in advance to have your best chance for success.

If you have a Credit Card by any other company that accrues points, the points are computed to purchase a ticket. The amount of points is based on the cost of the ticket. This point exchange is generally much higher than with Amex.

Advantage is no blackouts and any seat can be purchased with the points.

For International transactions your card company will most often charge a transaction fee of 1% to 5% on top of the cost of the purchase.

Some Capital One Cards and Amex Platinum charge 0%. On a large transaction this can be money thrown away. When you shop abroad by internet or when travelling keep this in mind.
