Port St. Lucie looking to turn lights off

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - The City of Port St. Lucie is trying to find ways to save money and one idea that could save the city thousands of dollars a month is to shut off the street lights in three different areas.

But darkening the area's streets could cause safety issues -- causing the council to leave the lights on.

Now, it's back to the drawing board for the transportation committee to find somewhere else to save money.

Jesse Quirion of Port St. Lucie Traffic Operations said the city is looking at lighting alternatives such as industrial lighting, led lighting and solar.

The problem is that it has a big initial cost meant for savings later when some people say the city need the savings now.
