Python strangling trial: Couple used quilt for lid

SUMTER COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Jury selection is set to begin in the case of a Sumter County couple accused of failing to keep a python from strangling and killing a 2-year-old girl.

Charles Darnell and Jaren Hare kept their 8-foot-6-inch albino snake "Gypsy" in a glass terrarium with a quilt for a lid when it attacked Hare's daughter, Shaianna, in her crib.

The couple face charges of manslaughter and child neglect.

According to our newspartners at the Sun Sentinel, if convicted, they could serve 35 years in prison.
