Pet Owners: Pick-up or Pay-up

STUART, FL (WFLX)  Pet owners will have to pay up if they don't pick up in the city of Stuart.

The commission approved a new pet waste ordinance Monday night.

The rules say pet owners are responsible for cleaning up their dog's messes on any property, public or private, that's not the owner's premises.

Neighbors can report people not following the ordinance.  Pet owners will be fined $25  for the first violation.

Three offenses in a 90-day period will cost $100.

"Just want people to be kinder, gentler, less slippery with their pets and take the time to do the right thing", said Stuart Mayor Jeff Krauskopf.  "That's what were's going to focus on. We're not going to have poop nazis running around.  It's an education process"

You can find complaint forms on the city of Stuart's website:

The ordinance does not apply to service animals or police dogs who are on duty.
