Stuart pet owners: Pick up or pay up

STUART, Fla. - Pet owners will have to pay up if they don't pick up in the city of Stuart.

The city commission approved a new pet waste ordinance Monday night.

The new rules say pet owners are responsible for cleaning up their dog's messes on any property, public or private, that's not the owner's premises.

Neighbors can report people not following the ordinance, and pet owners will be fined $25 for the first violation.

Three offenses in a 90-day period will cost $100. "We just want people to be kinder, gentler, less slippery with their pets and take the time to do the right thing," says Mayor Jeff Krauskopf. "That's what we're going to focus on. We're not going to have poop Nazis running around. It's an education process."

You can find complaint forms on the city of Stuart's Web site.

The ordinance does not apply to service animals or police dogs who are on duty.
