Pahokee mayor literally dodges bullets

PAHOKEE, FL (WFLX) - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting in the 100 block of S. Elm Street in Pahokee.

According to authorities, Mayor J.P. Sasser was returning home from a commission meeting, when he heard multiple gunshots and called 911. He was not struck.

Sasser was entering his home when he heard five shots fired.

"By the time I emptied my hands, and could get to where I had a gun, and was going to protect myself, I saw the individual standing in the bushes and when I drew down on him with my gun, he took off running," said Sasser.

Officials have described the suspect as a tall man, wearing all black.

"They had to have known I was coming home from a commission meeting tonight, so it was a setup," he said. "There was nothing random about this at all."

Sasser says he believes he may have been targeted because of his anti-crime initiatives.

The mayor said if something like this ever happens again, he won't hesitate to fight back.

If anyone has information about the shooting, they are urged to contact Palm Beach County CrimeStoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
