ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Seventeen-year-old Tyler Hadley made his first appearance from the St. Lucie County Jail in front of a judge at the St. Lucie County Courthouse around 8:45 Tuesday morning.
Hadley was wearing a sleeveless black jail uniform as he appeared via videoconference.
The judge told Hadley he was charged with two counts of second degree murder with a weapon.
Police accuse Hadley of killing his parents, Blake and Mary Jo Hadley. Their bodies were found in their locked bedroom at 371 N.E. Granduer Avenue Sunday morning.
They say they found a 22-inch hammer in between their bodies, and it is believed to be the murder weapon.
Hadley told the judge he didn't have an attorney, so the judge appointed a public defender to represent the teen.
Even though police charged Hadley with first degree murder, the highest charge the state can file without a grand jury indictment is second degree murder.
The grand jury is expected to meet in the next month or month-and-a-half.
Hadley had his head down when the judge told him bond would be denied.
