Chilling details released in PSL double murder

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Gruesome new details are emerging in a Port St. Lucie double murder case.

Seventeen-year-old Tyler Hadley is accused in the murder of his parents -- killing them with a hammer -- and then leaving their bodies inside a bedroom while throwing a party at the home.

Tyler Hadley is on suicide watch at the PSL jail. Meanwhile, friends and family have been saying they can't even imagine what was going through his mind at the time of the killings.

Documents, released Wednesday, shed light on that. His best friend, who is also a key witness, paints a picture of the Tyler he knew. He says Tyler has been struggling in life for the past few years.

"Tyler has no criminal history," said Thomas Nichols, Port St. Lucie Police Department.

So how could this teen brutally murder his parents inside their Port St. Lucie home, and then throw a house party? "After he told me, I didn't believe him. He's been my best friend forever," said Michael Mandell.

Fox 29 spoke exclusively to police's key witness and Tyler's best friend, Michael Mandell, who told them a chilling story outlined in seven pages of newly released documents.

Mandell told police his best friend, Tyler, confided in him and told him he killed his parents hours before the party.

Hadley said his mom, Mary Jo, was sitting at the computer for about five minutes before he decided to strike her in the back of her head with a hammer. "It makes me feel sick."

He then told police the gruesome story continued with Tyler admitting he then stared into his father's eyes for a few minutes. Then, he went after him. Both of their bodies ended up in their bedroom.

Mandell says Tyler told him to search the house, and he would see the proof of what happened for himself. Mandell said there was more blood than he had expected. "He told me if I look hard enough, I'd see signs of blood."

"I opened the door and saw bloody sheets and bloody pictures and saw his dad's leg," reported Mandell.

Mandell says it's all still something he can't wrap his mind around, and the Tyler Hadley he knows was always a "normal kid".

He says Tyler dropped out of high school recently and was dabbling with drugs, and, he says, Tyler told him he took three Ecstasy pills before committing the murders. "I want people to know he was always a good kid and just to stay off drugs."

As far as the allegations that Hadley was on drugs, police have not committed on that; however, the police affidavit released Wednesday does confirm they did test him for drugs and alcohol. The results have yet to be released.
