Two puppies found in a dumpster get new 'leash' on life

JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - These days, many families may find themselves struggling to pay the bills or feed a household. Because of this, family pets are often the first to suffer.

Safe Harbor Animal Rescue in Jupiter has been in operation for 26 years. Their latest rescue happens to be two puppies, now named Toby and Tony, who were found in a Dumpster.

The founder of Safe Harbor, Kay-Lynette Roca, says a man happened to be walking past the Dumpster on Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach when he heard whimpering noises. Inside he found four eyes looking up to him in desperate need of help.

"It's hard not to lose your faith in humanity sometimes," says Roca.

The puppies were nearly baking to death as temperatures soared above 90 degrees. They were stricken with worms and other medical issues as well.

"That to me is clear intent of cruelty," says Roca. "Putting them in a Dumpster. No excuse, absolutely no excuse."

The good Samaritan brought them to Safe Harbor. The rambunctious pups are now on their way to better living. Chief veterinarian James Wells says this is only one happy ending and many more are needed.

"I wish we could say that's the only case that happened. It's not," says Wells. "People walk away leaving them in abandoned homes, apartments. No food no water."

The number of abandoned animals is on the rise but the center says donations to help care for them have dropped in the last few years. Workers here haven't been paid in more than a month.

"That's how destitute we are," says Roca.

Roca says last year Safe Harbor performed $300,000 dollars worth of free vet care. Without more financial help she says animals like Toby and Tony, who were left for dead, will have no place that will offer them a new life.

So far, there are no leads as to who may have dumped the puppies.
