Surprising leader in Florida GOP U.S. Senate race

TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WFLX) - - A virtually unknown retired army colonel is leading the Florida GOP race for U.S. Senate, according to a new poll released today by Quinnipiac University.

Colonel Mike McAlister leads establishment candidates Adam Hasner and former U.S. Senator George Lemieux in the race to be the Republican candidate to face US Senator Bill Nelson.

Pollster Peter Brown says the race is essentially wide open. "With so many people undecided the senate race is a huge muddle," Brown said.

The numbers break down like this; McAlister has 15 percent, Lemieux has 12 and 53 percent of the Republican voters asked told pollsters they're still undecided.

The poll claims at this point, any of the Republicans in the primary would lose to Nelson in the general election by at least 11 percent.
