Suicide leads to Hazmat in Lake Worth

Police and fire crews responded to an apartment on Via Poinciana after an emergency caller claimed they had received a text message from a person saying they were going to take their own life, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

When crews arrived, apartments were evacuated and EMS worked unsuccessfully to save the person's life, and found an unknown chemical present.

"They believe that they've isolated the compound down to a cyanide powder, which again is not cyanide exposure, but it is cyanide powder, commonly used in jewelry manufacturing, cleaning, that type of thing," explained Steve Delai, deputy chief for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

So far, air quality tests have not given dangerous readings.

Three deputies were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, one deputy was treated for heat-related illness.

Once the chemical is identified and removed, crime scene investigators will enter the apartment and residents will be allowed back in their homes.
