Former Rep. Mahoney arrested for DUI

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) - Former Democratic Congressman Tim Mahoney is facing DUI charges.

Palm Beach Gardens police said they found Mahoney asleep behind the wheel around 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the southwest corner of US 1 and PGA Boulevard. Mahoney was released from the Palm Beach County jail later in morning.

"I got arrested for DUI last night and it's regrettable," Mahoney said.  "I'd like to thank law enforcement for all they do. They do an outstanding job."

Palm Beach Gardens police said a North Palm Beach Police officer initially spotted the former representative sleeping behind the wheel.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to my attorney.  I plan to plead innocent because I made a concious effort not to drive last night," Mahoney said.

Mahoney was elected to congress in 2006 when incumbent Mark Foley resigned over emails he sent to teenage boys. He lost his re-election bid in 2008 after revealing he's had several affairs and put one of his lovers on the federal payroll as a congressional staffer.
