Sixty-one year-old woman swimming from Cuba to Keys

HAVANA, CUBA (WFLX) - An endurance swimmer is trying to make the history books this week.

Sixty-one-year-old Diana Nyad says she intends to complete her swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys. She got into the water and started Sunday night near Havana and plans to be in the Keys by Wednesday if all goes smoothly.

This is no easy feat for Nyad, who tried to make the same crossing back in 1978. Back then, she tried doing it while swimming inside a steel shark cage. The strong sea currents stopped her swim after 42-hours.

Nyad is trying again, this time, without a shark cage. "When one reaches this age, you still have a body that's strong, but now you have a better mind. A mind at peace with the joy of the world; a mind that's full of courage and not afraid. Now, I look out at a dead, flat calm, so, I think, this is my day."

If the seas and her body cooperates, she hopes to be in the record books on Wednesday.
