Deputies disciplined for sleeping on the job

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Asleep on the job and failing to react fast enough for a fellow deputy being attacked: Those are the accusations surfacing about problems with sheriff's deputies working at the St. Lucie County Jail.

One of the deputies facing charges, Sgt. Lynn Exposito, was suspended for five days following accusations she did not properly manage an early morning incident at the county jail last January.

A fellow deputy was attacked by an inmate and gouged in the eye. Investigators say they discovered that Sgt. Exposito was apparently relaxing and just trying to stay awake at the time. The department also criticized her decision not to place the inmate in a restraint chair and pursue charges against the inmate after the attack.

Her case is part of a jail probe that began in March. Deputy Scott Kaler was part of the inmate booking staff and was accused of sleeping on the job. He, too, was suspended for five days.

Documents say after that investigators began to track down rumors that other deputies working for the inmate booking staff were either inattentive or actually sleeping on the job. Jail videotapes reportedly revealed deputies were not always at those posts and went into, "specific areas for hours at a time". The internal reports do not name those areas.

According to internal documents, Sgt. Thomas Siegert admitted he slept at work on occasion and knew other deputies were doing so as well. Siegert is quoted as saying, "Sorry, my mistake was I got caught up in the trap of trying to be their friend instead of their supervisor".

Siegert was demoted to deputy and will be on disciplinary probation for a year and faces monthly evaluations.

When asked, officials with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office had no comment regarding the incidents.
