STUART, FL (WFLX) - An elite Navy SEAL, killed in a chopper crash in Afghanistan last week, was remembered Saturday night in Tennessee. Aaron Vaughn's family and friends held a memorial service for him in Franklin, Tennessee.
During high school, Vaughn lived in Stuart, and now the Treasure Coast communities are planning tributes to him.
Kara Russel, 17, said she is thinking about what Vaughn's family must be going through and also about how she can help them. "Probably shock," Russel said. "It might not really have set in yet."
Vaughn left behind a wife and two young children, 2-year-old Reagan and 2-month-old Chamberlyn. "They still have a lot of time growing up that their mother needs to support them and it's going to be hard for her as a single mother," Russel said.
Russel is now organizing a November 19 fundraiser, a 3K memorial walk, in Stuart's Flagler Park. "Holding a walk would let the family know that the community is really here for them," she said.
Russel lost her father to cancer when she was just a kid and knows Vaughn's family is struggling. "I feel like he gave his life for our country so that we could be living here, living the way that we do," she said. "And not a lot of people step up to honor somebody like that."
