Man shocked by tree while doing yard work

LANTANA, FL (WFLX) - A near-death experience is leading a West Palm Beach dad to speak up in hopes it won't happen to you.

It all started during a what most would consider a routine household chore.
Todd Liccardi, a carpenter and father of two, had some time to kill between jobs last Wednesday. "I was out here just trying to clear out some of the dead brush."
Having done yard work here before, he thought he knew every square inch. But the power lines are easy to miss. "As soon as I grabbed the tree, I started feeling the electrical shock," said Liccardi.
In fact, a picture taken right after shows his handprint burned into the side of the tree. "I felt the shock run into my arm and down into my chest," said Liccardi.
The power lines happened to be touching the tree he grabbed, electrifying the whole thing. "It wasn't until an FPL lineman showed up who told me how lucky I was. Most of the time, situations like this, people die," said Liccardi.

Florida Power and Light says this is both an unfortunate and excellent reminder that it's crucial to stay 10 feet away from anything that's touching a power line. "Take a few extra minutes, look around and see what your surroundings hold. We want you to consider every power line as being active," said Greg Brostowicz, a spokeperson for Florida Power and Light.

The problem is so significant they even have a Web site dedicated to landscape maintenance.

It says their crews will prune any trees that could be hazardous in windy weather.

That's something that Liccardi, who spent days in the hospital and is still being treated for electric shock, will never forget, especially when he's with his kids.

"That they could be standing here without me right now.  That's a scary thought," said Liccardi.

FPL's Web site answers tons of questions about pruning and tree safety. The web address is www.fpl.com/trees.
