Undercover sting lands 34 juveniles in jail

PALM SPRINGS, FL (WFLX) - An undercover sting targeting minors in possession of alcohol at the Tabu Nightclub in Palm Springs resulted in the arrest of 34 people Thursday night -- four of which were juveniles.

Three 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old were among the 34 arrested during what police are calling "Operation Underage Tabu," according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Palm Springs Police Chief Mark C. Hall said in a press release that one 17-year-old female blew a .174 on a portable breath tester and the 16-year-old female blew a .222. Another 18-year-old female blew a .274, even though she stated she had not had too much to drink.

"This level of alcohol in a person's blood is on the verge of what is considered alcohol poisoning," said Hall.

Hall said in a release that one bartender was arrested for serving alcohol to two underage operatives in the nightclub. However, Hall said the number of persons inside the nightclub with fake ID's and the number of servers who were arrested had greatly decreased from a similar operation conducted last year.

Of the 33 underage drinkers arrested, 18 were arrested in the parking lot, prior to ever having entered the club, while 15 were arrested inside the club, according to a release.

Hall said the nightclub has significantly improved upon its processes to reduce underage drinking, but work still needs to be done. "Based on the number of arrests made last night, it is apparent we need to continue sending a message to those under 21, we do not tolerate underage drinking at bars and nightclubs in the Village," said Hall.
