Defense claims innocence of DA employee

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - An employee of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center spent her weekend in jail and her birthday in court.

Terri Guerra turned 53 Monday while she was charged in bond court with selling drugs illegally. She faces $50,000 in bond and in-house arrest. She has been ordered not to have contact with controlled substances, and not to travel. Her passport is being held by the DEA.

Guerra is in charge of ordering pharmaceuticals for the hospital. The defense told the judge that while their client knew her son was hiding thousands of oxycodone pills and about $100,000 in a safe in her attic, there is no evidence that she assisted him to acquire the pills.

An arrest affidavit shows that Guerra's son, Larry Dorsey, was arrested by the DEA in Pittsburg trying to sell oxycodone. A witness in court said of the pills Dorsey was carrying, about 90 percent matched the exact brand and strength of pills Guerra handles at the VA.

A witness from the VA Medical Center who was in bond court could not confirm whether there was evidence at the hospital of missing or mishandled pills.

Guerra's attorney Joe Atterbury says his client is innocent, and the proof will be that there are no drugs missing from the VA.

Guerra was one of about two dozen employees and patients arrested at the medical center after a six-month undercover investigation.

Her attorney says, Guerra wants her job back once the trial is over.  In court Guerra sais she has been an employee of the VA for almost 20 years, and is currently making $50,000 a year.

A character witness from her church described her as "solid, dependable, the type of person you can count on, and consistent."
