PBC emergency management prepping for Irene

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Palm Beach County emergency management is less than a day away from devising a plan to deal with Hurricane Irene, according to the county's Assistant Public Safety Department Director Vincent Bonvento.

A conference call between all South Florida emergency management departments and the National Weather Service took place Monday morning.

Irene's path isn't clear enough yet to make key decisions, says Bonvento.

Those decisions include opening shelters, protecting county buildings and equipment and advising the county school district.

District superintendent Bill Malone is in discussion with Bonvento and other officials at the county Emergency Operations Center.

If winds reach 40 miles-per-hour, the district will cancel classes.

Bonvento says the Red Cross would likely use some school buildings for shelters in the event of a hurricane.

The Emergency Operations Center, located in West Palm Beach, is currently in a increased monitoring mode.

A conference call between the National Weather Service and all South Florida emergency management services is tentatively scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The result of that phone conference could dictate further emergency planning for Irene.
