Stuart man, arrested for attempted attack, upset about US banking system

STUART, FL (WFLX) - On a quiet street, along the St. Lucie River, is the most recent home of 27-year-old Glenn Neff. But late last night, Neff was arrested nearly a thousand miles away.

Police at Cabin John Park in Bethesda, Maryland found Neff and his Jeep after the park had closed. They also found the SUV had been fitted with a turret and multiple tubes, police believe, were meant to shoot off the cache of fireworks found inside the vehicle.

Investigators say Neff planned to shoot them off at the National Mall. "He was trying to draw attention to himself and his issues with the banking system," said Lt. Lauryn McNeill with the Maryland National Park police.

Those issues Neff outlined on his Facebook page. In an open letter to friends earlier this year, he wrote the bankers at the Federal Reserve engineered this financial crisis on purpose.

While Neff told park police he didn't intend to hurt anyone or damage any structures, people who use professional fireworks in our area say it's still a very dangerous situation.

Jim Yurillo with Creative Fireworks in Jensen Beach said, "It could have been disastrous. Fireworks are unpredictable to start with. That's why they're regulated the way they are."

Yurillo says they have to follow strict distance guidelines when they design their shows. "When someone just freelance shoots fireworks anywhere, you never know what could happen."

So who is Glenn Neff? According to his online bio, he only recently moved to the Stuart area.
Family friend Dr. R.A. Swiezy said Neff had just returned from a six-month trip to the Czech Republic. "He's a little bit withdrawn but very very nice. A nice young man," said Swiezy.

Neff had no prior criminal history in Martin County. He was charged with possession of a destructive device, transport of a destructive device and manufacture of a destructive device. Each charge carries a penalty of up to 25 years in jail.

Neff is also facing charges for possession drug paraphernalia, which was allegedly found in his car.
