Fugitive shot by US Marshals in Boynton community

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Two people are recovering from gunshot wounds Thursday morning after a confrontation with U.S. Marshals.

Update, THU 8 AM: The shootout happened in Boynton Beach Wednesday night at the Monterey Lakes Community near South Congress Avenue.

The U.S. Marshal Service says they tried to arrest Samir Herrara, a fugitive from the Miami area. Authorities say when Hererra drove away from the community, he allegedly fired several shots and ran into cars.

Hererra and a female companion were reportedly hit when the marshals returned fire. They're recovering at Delray Medical Center where their conditions remain unknown.

Previously: U.S. Marshals have confirmed they were searching for 34-year-old Samir Herrera, a fugitive from the Miami area, when shots broke out in the Monterey Lakes community near South Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach Wednesday night.

Herrera has been in jail for the past 15 years, but was released last December. In April, he faced new charges which he failed to appear in court for.

Marshals say a shootout took place when Herrera tried to get away from the Monterey Lakes community. He and a female companion were reportedly hit by gun fire, but their conditions are unknown.

No officers or marshals were injured during the incident.

Residents in the area say several cars have bullet holes and neighbors have been told to stay in their homes. One resident reported hearing a barrage of gun fire that lasted for several minutes.
