Treasure Coast church to commemorate 9/11

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) The 10th anniversary of 9/11 will be commemorated at a Treasure Coast church with pieces of steel from the Twin Towers, shaped into a cross.

A four foot tall, several hundred pounds, symbolic structure made of steel from the World Trade Center carries more than its share of weight.

"It came about we have a number of firefighters who are retired from the New York, New Jersey area and they first told me about the steel being available followed their lead and was able to get the cross," said Father Victor Ulto.

Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie has big plans for the cross.  It will be placed outside in front of the new church.  A gift from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and it came with only a few requirements.

The cross bears a huge reflection for those who will cross its path, not just parishioners at St. Bernadette,  but all who come in contact with a piece of history that reshaped our lives.

"Its a real symbol this cross of sacrifice was once a symbol of death now love and life as it did with Jesus," said Father Ulto.
