MIAMI (WFLX) - Hurricane Katia has become a hurricane again; meanwhile, Tropical Depression 13 is nearly statioinary in the Gulf of Mexico. Winds are 35 mph. It will bring heavy rain to the Northern Gulf this weekend. Flooding is likely.

Katia is moving toward the west, northwest at 14 mph and now has 75 mph winds. A general motion toward the west-northwest and a decrease in forward speed are expected during the next few days.

It has some dry air and some slight wind shear so not much strengthening is anticipated for the next 24-36 hrs. But conditions will get more favorable for intensification over the weekend. Some strengthening is forecast then.

After that a trough should pick up Katia and turn it toward Bermuda by the middle of next week. There is a possibility that the trough won't pick it up fast enough and it will turn back toward the west, bringing it closer to the U.S. East Coast mid-late week. We will keep an eye on it and keep you informed on the very latest.

Tropical Depression 13 remains nearly stationary south of the Louisiana coast. Rain is sweeping across much of the southeastern part of the state. Maximum sustained winds are about 35 mph. The depression is moving about 2 mph to the northwest.

The National Hurricane Center says the system could be near hurricane strength before landfall in about 48 hours.

The National Hurricane Center says tropical storm force winds are being reported on oil rigs north and east of the depression's center at elevations of a few hundred feet.

TD 13 is expected to produce rain amounts of 10-to-15 inches over southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Alabama through Sunday. In some isolated areas the storm could dump 20 inches of rain. Extensive flooding is expected.
