Husband arrested for allegedly holding family hostage

SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A standoff ended peacefully Monday morning at a home in suburban West Palm Beach.

It began around 5 a.m. in the 5-thousand block of Norma Elaine Road when deputies received a call from a neighbor claiming to hear screaming at a nearby home.

When deputies arrived, a man was holding his wife and two children inside the home with a gun, officials said.

Haverhill Road was closed between Vilma Lane and Elmhurst Road for hours as deputies, SWAT team members and investigators surrounded the neighborhood. Some homeowners were even asked to evacuate.

At some point shots were fired, but no one was hurt and the woman and her children left the residence unharmed.

Eventually the man surrendered and was taken into custody.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera identified the man to the Palm Beach Post as Hilmer Marquez, 35.

Marquez has a history of arrests for aggravated battery and driving under the influence of alcohol, Barbera told the Post.

Haverhill Road, which had been closed, is now open.
