Ft. Pierce teen allegedly beats infant nearly to death

FORT PIERCE, FL (WFLX) - Police detectives in Fort Pierce have arrested a 19-year-old man after, they say, he beat a 1-month-old to near death.

Mikey Martinez, of 345 East Weatherbee Road in Fort Pierce, has been charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

The male child, born August 15, was originally taken to a hospital in Port St. Lucie, but has since been flown to St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach.

The child suffered two skull fractures, and his condition is unknown at this time.

According to the Fort Pierce Police Department, police were alerted to the alleged abuse on Wednesday, when officials from the St. Lucie Medical Center reported unusual injuries to the boy's head.

Officers and detectives responded to the hospital to conduct an investigation, which they say lead them to believe Martinez caused the injuries by hitting the boy with a closed fist on the head.

Martinez was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail and is currently being held without bond.
