Rothstein associates get 3 years for Ponzi scheme

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (AP)  Two former associates of convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein have been sentenced to just more than three years each in federal prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in South Florida reports that 38-year-old William Corte and 38-year-old Curtis Renie were each sentenced Wednesday to 37 months.

Prosecutors say Corte and Renie helped Rothstein's $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme by creating fake Internet pages making it seem that investors' money was safe. The scam revolved around investments in phony legal settlements that Rothstein and others concocted.

Rothstein is serving a 50-year prison sentence after pleading guilty. Prosecutors recently said they would seek a sentence reduction because of Rothstein's cooperation in unraveling his scam and other investigations.
