BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - The Palmetto Park pavilion is roped off as the city waits to repair the popular gathering spot.

A car smashed through the pavilion early Sunday morning, but it is scheduled to be removed Wednesday.

City officials say a woman may have been trying to commit suicide when she drove her car "at a high rate of speed," according to a top city official, through the parking area and straight into two wooden support columns.

Those columns are now badly damaged.

The car - in essence - is holding up the roof of the pavilion that is at the eastern end of Palmetto Park Road, which is why it has taken so long for crews to remove it.

The pavilion overlooks the beach and is often a gathering place for people who want to take in the scenery.

Officials say there were no witnesses to the crash, that happened at 12:10 a.m. Sunday.

The driver was the only person in the car and her injuries are not deemed life threatening, according to a city official.

Two support beams are damaged and some of the landscaping around the sidewalk is also disturbed.

The city could not estimate how much the repairs will cost, or whether some of it will be covered by insurance.

There is no timetable for when the parking area can be reopened.

It is currently roped off by police tape.

The city estimates it could be losing $200 per day on lost parking fees.

City Hall says it will be able to make the pavilion "like new" again, which was rehabilitated as part of a larger renovation of the area around the beach in 2002.

That renovation cost taxpayers $2 million.

The beach was open as normal, although one staircase to the beach was closed.

Beach visitors had to take the ramp that is handicapped accessible to get to the beach.

The age and identity of the woman involved in the crash is being withheld, pending a police investigation.
