COPY-Sheriff: Mountain lion, grizzly bear and monkey remain on the loose

Three animals remain on the loose in Muskingum County, including a mountain lion, grizzly bear and a monkey.

Muskingum County Sheriff confirms the owner, Terry Thompson died from a self-inflicted wound.  The sheriff says as many as 51 animals could have escaped.  At least 31 animals were shot.

Other exotic animals, including lions, tigers, giraffes and camels, were spotted along Interstate 70.

One big cat was hit and wounded on the interstate.

Police say Thompson's body was found Tuesday outside of his home.  They believed the animals escaped through a fence which was left open.

For safety reasons several schools are closed Wednesday.

"This is a bad situation. It's been a bad situation for a long time and the last thing we wanna do is have any of our public hurt. And we want them to take any precaution," Sheriff Matt Lutz said.

Thompson, who owned the Muskingum County Animal farm, was recently released from prison.

Muskingum County Sheriff Department has handled numerous complaints from the preserve in the past.

Well-known animal expert, Jack Hanna is helping with the hunt.  Hanna says he has received a lot of complaints from animal groups, criticizing the police on shooting and killing some of the animals.  Hanna says law enforcement had to do what they had to do to protect human life.
