Canoeist disappears in Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - A search has so far come up empty for a canoeist last seen in the Intracoastal Waterway in Boca Raton.

Sunday afternoon a resident living in the six hundred block of Golden Harbor Drive says he saw a white man in his 50s paddling in a 15-foot orange canoe.

A few minutes later, the homeowner came back outside and discovered that the canoe was upside down and the rower was missing.

Police arrived and canvassed the area. They say they found another witness who gave them a similar story.

The Boca Raton Police Underwater Search and Recovery team, Boca Raton Fire Rescue and the Aviation Unit from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office then responded and conducted an extensive search. They were not able to locate anyone.

Another search was organized Monday morning but the canoeist, who was wearing a tan floppy hat at the time of his disappearance, has not been located.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Boca Raton Police Department at (561) 416-3350.
