Waves slam boat into jetty

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - From southern Palm Beach County up through the Treasure Coast, people flocked to the beaches to see how powerful the surf has been over the last several days. In some cases, that surf proved to be very dangerous.

Cell phone video taken by one resident Dave Risley shows frantic beachgoers and an approximately 18 foot boat caught in the rough surf near the Boynton Beach Inlet. Risley and his wife Debbie were motorcycling along the coast when they stopped to admire the power of the waves. "We thought  'oh my goodness, what is that little boat doing in those waves' and he continued on out," said Mr. Risley.

Risley said the boat was getting knocked around in the surf, with waves crashing onto the four people on board. "Is he going to flip over? Is he going to capsize right in front of us? We might be seeing what happens here," he thought as he continued recording on his cell phone.

The Risleys said the boat had lost power and was being pushed quickly toward a jetty. "The waves just kept pushing the boat up on top of the rocks and other wave hit it and it knocked it off the rocks," said Mr. Risley. The waves slammed the boat onto the shore, where the Riselys saw the two adults and two teens - now with lifejackets on - were able to hop off of the vessel directly onto the sand. It did not appear they were injured.

Farther up the coast, Tina Coleman captured cell phone video of what the crashing waves had done near some public restrooms at Jupiter Inlet. "As I got there, I realized the waves were coming over the dunes into the parking lot," said Coleman.

The rough surf and high tide were a dangerous combination on the coast this weekend. Rough conditions are expected to continue through the week.
