Deadly day at the beach

JENSEN BEACH, FL (WFLX) A day at the beach turned deadly Wednesday afternoon in Jensen Beach.

34-year-old Melissa Brooks and her twin sister Danielle could not escape a rip current and according to officials, Melissa died from her injures after being transported to Martin Memorial Health Systems in Stuart.

Officials were contacted about the incident shortly before 3 p.m., said Doug Killane, Martin fire rescue spokesman. He said the two women were about 50 yards out in the ocean, about 300 yards north of a lifeguard tower.

Killane said the women became distressed, and three people ran to the lifeguard station. They got the lifeguards, who pulled the swimmers out and performed CPR.

"They were unresponsive at the time," Killane said. "The surf is extremely rough, serious rip currents out there."

Experts say if you are ever caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until the current loosens its grip.
