RIVIERA BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Family members of the 16-year-old shot and killed in Riviera Beach Thursday afternoon say his name is Jerry.
Now, Jerry is the latest victim of gun violence in our community.
Investigators say Jerry and three acquaintances were walking in a Riviera Beach backyard around 3 p.m. when the teen was approached by another male juvenile near the 2700 block of Avenue H East. "We do not want to have anything like this occur in Riviera Beach or any place else," said Roseanne Brown, a spokesperson for Riviera Beach Police.
Police say witnesses saw the shooter run from the scene. Detectives say they have identified him, but are not releasing his name in the middle of their search. "I was outside with the baby. I heard gunshots, then my cousin called and said 'they shootin' girl, they shootin,'" said one neighbor.
The motive for the murder is not yet clear; though, police say, the victim and the shooter had an ongoing dispute of some sort and were known enemies. "It's kids killing kids, and that's just not right," said one neighbor.
"Two mothers are going to be crying tonight. One for the shooter, and one for the dead child," said neighbor Barbara Roberts.
Police believe the suspect may have run into a home in the area of the shooting.
