Boy's dog shot by neighbor, Good Samaritan pays for surgery

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Young Pablo Hernandez and his dog, "Crazy," are the epitome of the phrase "a boy and his dog".

"When I come home from school, and I'm walking home, she's always running the fence with me," said Hernandez.

Inseparable for the past four years, Pablo was understandably shaken when his best friend came limping home Friday night with multiple bullet wounds. "She has two inside her stomach, and one inside her foot," said Hernandez.

Pablo followed a trail of blood back to his neighbors home, and called the police. Upon arrival, the neighbor admitted to police that he fired six shots at the dog when he discovered it in his yard.

Without the money to pay for treatment, shelter after shelter told Pablo that his best bet was to euthanize his best friend. "I don't want to do that. I've had that dog since she was a baby. I don't want to do that to my dog," said Hernandez.

Eve Van Engel with Paws 2 Help, took the family pet in. "There is a lot of pain. We have the dog on pain control medication, but what it really needs is surgery to remove the bullet before it migrates somewhere else and does more damage," said Van Engel.

Unfortunately, the cost of the necessary surgery was still too much for the family's cash strapped finances.

Then, help walked through the door. "They needed some help, so I came down," said Arthur Benjamin, a businessman and the founder of American Dog Rescue. Benjamin heard about the family's plight, and decided to step in.

With his help, some sanity has returned to Crazy's life. "Saving dogs is about one dog at a time. It's not about saving every dog. It's about the stories," said Benjamin.

The veterinarians at Paws 2 Help performed the life-saving surgery late Sunday night. Crazy is now recovering at home with her family.
