Best rewards credit cards

(WFLX) - They're in your mailbox, online and on TV. They're credit card offers, promising you big rewards, but which ones are really the best?

With the help of Bill Hardekopf from lowcards.com -- we found the best cards with the best benefits.

He says if your passion is travel, go for an airline rewards cards. If you like to work in the yard, there are home improvement cards that pay you a reward. If you like  to do a lot of traveling and stay in hotels, there are hotel rewards cards. Plus, there's the cash back card that's good just about anywhere.

Based on current offers, here's what Hardekopf says are the best cards for gas points, restaurant rebates, cash back and travel.

The Capital One Venture card has one of the most generous offers. You get two airline miles for every dollar you charge. You can earn unlimited miles and they never expire. The annual fee is $59, so you'll need to charge $3,000 annually for it to pay off.

A lot of cards offer cash back. Hardekopf says the Chase Freedom card is one of the best. It offers $200 cash back in the first three months and then 1% cash back on purchases with no limit. Charge $10,000.00,  and you'll get $100 back plus the $200 cash bonus. Remember, you need to pay off the entire balance each month or the interest charges will wipe out any benefits.

How about a card that pays you back for filling up and dining out -- all in one? The Discover Open Road card gives you a 2% cash back bonus at any gas station and any restaurant, and you'll get a $150 gift certificate from restaurant.com after your first purchase.

Remember these card companies want to make money not lose it, so make sure you understand how the card you choose benefits your pocket book.
