Hundreds attend candlelight vigil for Vero Beach murder victim

VERO BEACH, FL (WFLX) -- Hundreds gathered along the coastline Sunday at Jaycee Beach Park to support the family of Brian Simpson, 41, who was shot and killed inside his Vero Beach home. A candlelight vigil was held in honor of the husband, father and friend who was said to have a love for the ocean and for fishing.

Police said Simpson walked into a burglary in progress and found himself face to face with an armed intruder. On Sunday, investigators still had made no arrests and would not say if they were searching for any known suspects.

Loved ones and many others walked their way from the Fiddlewood Road home where Simpson was shot and killed to the ocean, just a few blocks away. "My brother loved the water," said Robert Simpson, brother of the victim. "We thought it would be a nice night to look into the ocean reflect on him and remember his presence," he said.

Simpson's loved ones cast long stem roses into the surf at sunset. "I'm going to miss him a lot," said Susan Haller, Simpson's sister. "I live here in Vero and it's just not going to be the same without him," she said.

He leaves behind a wife, Kristen, a son, Scott, and a daughter, Samantha. "He was a wonderful dad," said Simpson's mother in-law. "His kids were his pride and joy and he and Kristen were just like one person," she said.

As the investigation into Simpson's death presses on, a fund has been set up to help finance the college educations of both of his young children. Contributions may be made to:
