Strange copper wire theft

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX)  A Fort Pierce man is in custody charged with stealing 300 feet of copper wire.

But it's where he stole the wire that raised a few eyebrows.

Over the weekend, 24 year-old John Bonadia was photographed using bolt cutters to take the wire from the USAF microwave repeater tower in St. Lucie County, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit says the tower is vital to national security and if the tower had been hit by lightning without being grounded, hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment could have been destroyed.

Detectives believe Bonadia has hit the tower at least four times this year. Another arrest is expected in the case.
