DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (WFLX) - May 8 2010, tragedy struck a tightly knitted community. "When I looked over and saw the life just slipping out of him," recalled Jeff Soler.

It was a brain aneurysm. Doctors operated but after six months, Ranse Jones slipped away from this life. "I think about him every day," said Chad Barr.

Ranse will never play the game he loved so much again; however, he has an entire army of friends to play in his place. "The Ranse memory will never die," said Eric and Evan.

Saturday, they came together for the Ranse Jones Memorial Tournament in Deerfield Beach. "Ranse was such a great guy. He was somebody that was always a positive influence on everyone else. When he passed away, it just made sense that we did something to remember him," said Andre Melo, committee chairman of the tournament.

Ranse's family also came out to show their support. "He inspired everybody," said his father, Bob Jones. "He was a leader in football, and as you can tell, a leader in volleyball of all his friends. We're so happy that they would honor him in this way and that we may be a part of it."

Affectionately called Aunt Georgia and Uncle Jeff, they considered Ranse one of their own. "I think he'd love to be here with all his friends, and he would be amazed at this tribute," said his aunt.

"It was like having another son, and I respected him, and I know he respected me," added Jeff.

Monies raised from the Ranse Jones Memorial Tournament benefit Kids in Distress, a South-Florida based organization dedicated to preventing child abuse, preserving the family and treating abused and neglected children.
