WPB Commissioner calls for investigation

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) Just days after West Palm Beach city hall admitted to failing to keep track of grant money spent by a non-profit, a city commissioner is calling for an investigation.

Since Friday, NewsChannel 5 has been reporting that a non-profit corporation started by the Redemptive Life Fellowship Church of West Palm Beach is being investigated for possible misuse of $4 million taxpayer dollars between 2005 and 2010.

During a city commission agenda review Monday, commissioner Keith James said he was angry about the leak of a city audit explaining the investigation.

He called the church's bishop, Harold Ray, an "upstanding citizen."

Yet James also admitted that he at one time represented the church and attends services there.

He said an investigation into the leak is important because it tarnished the reputation of the church before the city's investigation was over.

"I hope that is not the way we conduct business. If someone is having an issue with the city, I would hope that they would present the case without it becoming a media firestorm," he said.

Late Monday afternoon, Mayor Jeri Muoio told NewsChannel 5 that despite going along with the idea of an investigation during the meeting, she told city staff later in the day not to conduct it, saying a "witch hunt," wouldn't be appropriate.

Commissioner Keith James did not return numerous requests for comment.
