Express toll lanes could come to Boca

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX)  Express toll lanes could soon be used to help reduce traffic snarls on the interstate in southern Palm Beach County.

You may have seen them if you've driven to Miami on I-95. The Florida Department of Transportation says the lanes are a success.

"It reduces congestion, and people using the express lanes are going faster than those in the general use lanes," says Barbara Kelleher, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation.

FDOT is now working on an 18-month study to see if express lanes would relieve congestion between Oakland Park Boulevard in Broward County and Glades Road in Boca Raton.

If express lanes are added, they would be in the middle of the Interstate, with three general use lanes on the outside. The current HOV lane would be gone. The lanes would cost anywhere from 25 cents to $1 per  mile to use.

"They're there for the long-distance motorists, the people who are going more than one or two exits," says Kelleher.

Some local drivers aren't convinced express lanes are the answer.

"When I go to Miami where the lanes are it seems more congested," says Chris Nader.

"I think it's just something to raise revenue," says Wilfred Lewis.

But for Cary Weaver, who travels from Ft. Lauderdale to Boca Raton every day, the lanes sound like a solution.

"If it's better especially when the snowbirds come down, I'm all for it," says Weaver.

FDOT wants to know how you feel about the potential project. Public comment is welcome at a meeting Thursday night at FAU's Alumni Hall on the Boca Raton campus from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
